The buses are back, the backpacks are packed, and the neighborhoods are buzzing again.
There’s something about the start of a new school year that feels like a reset button. New notebooks, new teachers, new goals. For a lot of families, there’s also a mix of excitement and nerves that makes the first day of school one of the most memorable mornings of the year. Whether it’s dropping off a kindergartner for the very first time or watching a senior walk through the doors for the last, one thing is for sure. Summer went way too fast.
At Danella, we work in communities across the country, so school zones, neighborhood streets, and the roads families rely on are never far from our work. As the new school year kicks off, we’re sharing a few simple reminders that make a real difference. When it comes to kids, a little extra awareness goes further than some may think.
- Slow down in school zones. Children are unpredictable, and reaction time matters. Even if you don’t see any kids, treat every school zone like one could step off the curb at any moment. Those reduced speed limits aren’t suggestions, they’re there for a reason, and they save lives. If you’re running late, a school zone is never the place to make up time.
- Watch for buses. When a school bus stops and the lights are flashing, that’s a full stop, no exceptions. The few seconds it costs you are nothing compared to what’s at stake. This applies to both directions of traffic unless a physical barrier separates the lanes. Many buses are now equipped with cameras, which can lead to law enforcement.
- Put the phone down. Distracted driving is dangerous anywhere, but in a neighborhood full of kids walking to school, it’s inexcusable. Whether it’s a text, a notification, or a quick scroll, it’s not worth it. Eyes up, every time.
- Give extra time in the morning. School day traffic is its own kind of chaos. Build in a few extra minutes so you’re not rushing through intersections or cutting corners to make up time. A few minutes of patience in the morning goes a long way.
Wishing a safe, successful, and unforgettable school year for every student, family, and educator out there!
