Awareness: National Substance Abuse Prevention Month

Published on: October 28, 2024

Categories: Health & Wellness

This October, we observe National Substance Abuse Prevention Month in hopes of bringing awareness to the millions of individuals who suffer from drug and alcohol dependencies.

Of the 46 million Americans 18 or older that died in 2021, 1 of every 22 deaths was attributed to unintentional overdose involving opioids. Earlier this year The New York Times ran an article noting that the construction industry is grappling with drug overdoses as a top killer. The CDC reports a 500% increase from 2012 to 2020 in workplace deaths due to unintentional overdose. This, on top of the already high fatalities related to injuries and suicide, creates continued concern for employee safety.

Take Action to Prevent Substance Abuse

Join the community in preventing prescription drugs from being abused, sold illegally, or put into waste systems by participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 26, 2024, at 10 AM. This event helps to prevent and reduce misuse of unused prescriptions. Many police departments and pharmacies participate in this day. Locate a drop-off site near you by clicking here.

Resources

Prevention and education are two important pieces of the puzzle, but access to resources to expand those is vital. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is a government agency dedicated to providing free resources to those struggling with substance abuse and their support systems. The SAFE Project provides resources and aims to reduce the stigma from seeking help for mental health and opioid addiction.

You’re Not Alone

Whether you’re struggling with mental health issues and substance abuse, know someone who is, or are actively supporting someone who is, know you’re not alone. Resources are available and movements are in place to help reduce the stigma and end the epidemic.
