June marks the start of summer cookouts, longer days, and sunscreen, but for those of us in the construction industry, it also marks something far more important…
June represents the beginning of many things. Warmer weather, longer weekends, and the unofficial start of summer, but it’s also got something a little more serious on the calendar. Every June, the National Safety Council (NSC) dedicates the entire month to raising awareness around the leading causes of preventable injuries and fatalities at work, on the road, and at home. Since its establishment in 1996, organizations across the country have used this month as a rallying point to double down on the safety cultures they work hard to build throughout the year.
This year, NSC has set four themes for each week of June to create awareness around specific aspects of safety:
- Week 1 (June 1-6) Moving Safety Forward: Safety isn’t static. This week is about actively seeking ways to reduce risk, close any gaps in protocols, and build a safety culture that goes beyond checking compliance boxes.
- Week 2 (June 7-13) Staying Safe on the Roads: Despite being the leading cause of work-related fatalities in the country, driving is one of the most undertrained skills in the workforce. This week is dedicated to bringing that conversation out into the open to make sure the people behind the wheel have the knowledge and training they deserve.
- Week 3 (June 14-20) Promoting Holistic Worker Health: This week spotlights how an employee’s physical safety and mental well-being are closely related, with fatigue, stress, and burnout contributing to workplace incidents. The focus for this week will be on the whole worker, not just what they are doing, but how they are doing.
- Week 4 (June 21-30) Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls: Slips, trips, and falls are among the leading causes of workplace injuries and can happen in virtually any environment. This week is about identifying the hazards hiding in plain sight and taking the steps to eliminate them before someone gets hurt. Danella is also taking things a step further by transitioning from traditional hard hats to safety helmets, complete with a chin strap for added security, a change that goes hand in hand with our commitment to keeping our crews protected. More info coming soon!
At Danella, these themes aren’t just relevant; they’re personal. With crews operating across the country in some of the most demanding environments in the utility construction service industry, safety is woven into everything we do. Pride in Everything We Do® isn’t just a tagline. It’s a promise that starts with every person on every job site making it home safely at the end of the day.
Happy National Safety Month. It may only come once a year, but the commitment behind it doesn’t have to.
