Because taking care of yourself isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s one of the most important things you can do for the people who depend on you.

June is a busy month on the calendar. Sitting right alongside National Safety Month, CPR Awareness Week, and Father’s Day is something equally important: Men’s Health Month. Recognized every June, Men’s Health Month is a national effort dedicated to raising awareness of the health challenges men and boys face throughout their lives, and this year, Danella is proud to observe it.

The numbers behind this month are hard to ignore. On average, men die six years earlier than women, usually from diseases that are preventable or manageable with the right care and early intervention. Delayed care, limited health education, and a cultural tendency to push through rather than seek help are some of the largest contributing factors. This year’s theme, Partners in Care, speaks directly to that, because men’s health doesn’t happen alone. Partners, families, caregivers, workplaces, and communities all play a role in helping the men around them live longer, healthier lives.

So what should men actually be paying attention to?

The top causes of death among men include heart disease, various cancers, particularly prostate, strokes, diabetes, unintentional injuries, and chronic liver disease. Many of these conditions come with warning signs that are easy to overlook or brush off. Chest discomfort, unexplained weight loss, abnormal thirst, slow-healing wounds, and changes in bowel or urinary habits are all signals worth taking seriously. When in doubt, get checked out.

Men’s Health Week kicked off on June 15th, with each day spotlighting a different focus area, from mental health and chronic conditions to fatherhood, family health history, and health in the workplace. Every Friday in June is also a Wear Blue Friday, an opportunity for individuals and organizations to show visible support for men’s mental and physical well-being.

At Danella, with a workforce that is largely made up of hardworking men showing up in demanding environments every single day, this month hits close to home. Take care of yourselves out there and look out for the people around you.
